Conventions of music videos
Cinematography
Music videos tend to include: Long shots, mid shots, and close ups. This is to accentuate and put focus onto the artist, emotions and location. Close ups can also be used to bring focus to the fact that that the artist or character is lip-syncing.
The camera movement is mainly used to follow and, or "track" the artist, this includes: panning, tilts, crane shots and a new popular alternative, Drone shots which is a camera that is attached to a drone that can fly and follow the artist.
Mise-en-scene
This is the props and scenery in which the music video is set. Mise-en-scene gives importance on the representation of something, for example in Tove lo's music video for "Cool girl" she dances on top of a clear coffin with what seems to be a manikin of herself inside, this represents how the "Old" Tove lo is dead, she has begun a new chapter changing her image and sound.
Editing
A very popular type of editing is the use of the jump cut as this allows a quick change from one scene to the next. this is usually used along side rhythmic editing, this is when the jump cuts are used in time with the beat of the track, this is very common in music videos.
Lighting
Most music videos will use artificial lighting as i will enhance the look of the artist in their setting, be it outside or in a studio in which artificial lighting is always used.
