Lyric analysis
I'm in a clique but I want out
it's not the same as when I was punched
in the old days there was enough
the card games and ease with the bitter salt of blood
I was in but I want out
my mother's love is chocking me
I'm sick of words that hang above my head
what about the kid? it's time the kid got free
The song is basically about being part of the "wrong" crowd and wanting to get out because of the negative connotations that come with being a part of this gang, in my video I will take this one step further and the crowd will become my generation and the negative connotations that the other / older generations have given us, which would be along the lines of, drugs, sex, alcohol and violence. These will be represented by the characters in the video, the prostitute, the druggy, the alcoholic, the cheater and then the murder of the drag queen at the very end.
Be a part of the love club
everything will glow for you
you'll get punched for the love club
for the love club
In the chorus of the song is where the vocalist is trying to convince you to join the club and saying that everything will become better and you'll be free, at this point the camera will tilt down to the floor to show the drag queen walking forward, subliminal message of if you join the club you'll move forward in life but at the same time the camera will pan all the way around disorientating the audience which is what will actually happen if you join the club as adolescence isn't the most straight forward time in someone's life.
I joined the club and it's all on
there are fights for being my best friend
and the girls get their claws out
there's something about hanging out with the wicked kids
take the pill make it to real
the other day I forgot my old address
I'm sitting pretty on the throne
there's nothing more I want
except to be alone
At this part of the song it sounds like she is discussing the inner turmoil of being a part of the club, which very much sounds like being a part of the popular group in high school, bitchy girls "girls get their claws out" and sitting on her throne, but she then juxtaposes that idea by saying all she wants is to be left alone, this could be commenting about teenage angst and anxiety. during this portion of the video I will begin to show the other characters and their roles.
CHORUS REPEAT
Your clothes are soaked and you don't know where to go
so drop your chin and take your self back home
and roll out your maps and papers
find out your hiding places again
the only problem that I've got with the club
is how you're severed from
the people who watched you grow up
when you're a member go on your great adventure again
they will be waiting at the end
This final verse is about wanting to now escape the club as it is not what you originally thought it would be and you are not free at all as you now have to conform to the "love club's" standards, this is basically the drag queens role as she takes you around and shows you the different stereotypes, the "love club's" standards.
During the final chorus of the song this is where the characters turn against the drag queen and basically kill her, this is them essentially freeing themselves from the "love
club" saying that they are more than these stereotypes and that they can not be put into some box so that society can categorize them just so they can easily understand what they are, but this is no longer how people work as everyone is unique and different.
